Patan

With a few 8 Kilometers in the south of Kathmandu, Patan, the city of beautiful arts is located. This old Newar capital from which the most splendid works of art from the country and the most prestigious craftsmen result, named formerly Lalitpur. Built on a plate crossed by Bagmati, crowned river, this city became a true alive museum!

It is oldest of the cities of the valley of Kathmandu and represents perfectly the richness and the smoothness of their culture and traditions of yesteryear. The Newars craftsmen were transmitted, generation after generation, the prestigious knowledge to make as regards woodcarving, of construction of temples and religious monuments. They formerly put in scene Hindu mythology by carving tirelessly the life of the Gods and Goddesses. And today still, same know-how remains in its streets.

It was built like an immense entire temple dedicated to the monk, surrounded by 4 large stupas, with each cardinal point. Its temples and innumerable statues decorate the city like as many offerings towards the divinities, always venerat

ed.

One can count more than thousand Buddhist monuments in this only city and his surroundings. But the most fundamental work and unavoidable remainder of course Durbar Square of Patan, in the centre town. By visiting the places, one includes/understands quickly why the site is classified with the world heritage by UNESCO!
